On the 26th of September, the Political Science Department organized a talk by Ajay Darshan Behera on the topic ‘Pakistan’s Identity as a South Asian state’. The event was attended by over 80 students and was of immense help to the students who have opted for South Asia.
Ajay Darshan Behera is a Professor at the Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. He is also the Coordinator of the Centre for Pakistan Studies at the Academy. His main areas of research interest are foreign policy and security issues in South Asia, Political Violence, Insurgency and Terrorism, Conflicts and Conflict Management, India’s Foreign Policy, Political Development and Foreign Policy of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Prior to joining the Academy of International Studies, he was the Officiating Director of the Centre for Strategic and Regional Studies, University of Jammu, Jammu. He has also been a Research Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi and Assistant Research Professor at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), New Delhi. During the course of the talk we got an interesting insight into the way Pakistan approaches history, especially its history with India. Dr. Behera also helped us understand why Pakistan tends to look more towards the West and the Middle Eastern states for support. The session was wrapped up with a question answer session where a lot of questions regarding the future of SAARC, India-Pakistan relations were raised.
